Who are the Bluegrass Black Hats?
The Bluegrass Black Hats are a Louisville-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to building community through dance, creativity, and connection. We perform at community events throughout Louisville and Southern Indiana, sharing the joy of movement while celebrating individuality, inclusion, and self-expression.
Our Mission :
The Bluegrass Black Hats are a non-profit, amateur dance troupe modeled after the Wolfsager Hexenbrut Witches Dance which has inspired groups throughout the world to come together to dance for joy, for friendship, for empowerment and inclusion.
We are building a radical, inclusive, intersectional community through dance. We claim the title Witch and hold space for all to reexamine what we’ve been taught to fear.
For generations, the image of the “black hat” has often been associated with mystery or fear. We choose to reclaim that symbol, transforming it into one of empowerment, acceptance, and celebration. Through movement, creativity, and a touch of magic, we invite people to see beyond old stereotypes and embrace the beauty of authenticity.

We are more than a performance group. We are a community built on encouragement, friendship, laughter and mutual support. Here, everybody is welcome, every experience level is valued, and every person has something meaningful to contribute. Whether you’ve danced your entire life or have never stepped onto a performance floor, you’ll find a place to belong.
As a membership-based nonprofit, we welcome individuals who want to learn, perform, volunteer, and help bring art, joy and connection into our communities. Together we rehearse, perform, support one another and create memorable experiences that celebrate creativity while giving back through community service and charitable work.
We believe dance has the power to build confidence, strengthen friendships, improve well-being and connect people across generations and backgrounds.
